MFW Adventures Week 5

I am happy to report that as a family, we are still loving My Father's World Adventures.  There is no fuss from the kids when school time begins each day.  What a difference from last year!

Bible: We continued to explore the concepts of Jesus being the light of the world (John 8:12).  I like that the curriculum sticks with the bible verse for two weeks.  It gives us more time to really grip the concepts. All three of the kids have now memorized the verse. The girls continued to pray for those friends and family that do not have Jesus in their hearts. They really took this task all the way! We continued to use our candles that we made last week during our dinner meals.

History: Our study was about the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. We watched a few videos about the Pilgrim leaving England to Holland and then 12 yrs arriving in America.  We read another story in our American Pioneers and Patriots book. The girls really enjoy this book and always ask to read more. Jake and Max loved the Charlie Brown Mayflower Voyage movie.  We made oiled paper windows, which is what the Pilgrims had in their homes.

We used our Interactive 3-D Maps: American History book. I have to say that this has been such a great resource for our family. Jake really enjoys playing with the little ships and moving them across the oceans.

I picked up this history pocket book last week.  The kids enjoyed completing a few of the projects. We will be using the majority of the book during the Thanksgiving week. It is a complete study of the Mayflower arriving in the New World and how the Pilgrims lived.  Lots of great information.

Science: We focused on the stars and solar system again this week.  We have been learning about single stars but this week we discussed constellations.  Our favorite constellation was the Big Dipper and it’s seven stars. It sits right over our neighbors house, so the kids can see it every night before bed. We haven't been able to find the little dipper yet. The best part of our week was spending the day at our local science and space museum. This was truly that highlight of our week.  The boys were in heaven there.  Here are some of my favorite pictures:

We had so much fun with the space theme this week. I made sure to take extra 1:1 time with Jake to play our Space Camp Wii game. Now I know why kids get addicted to these games. I found myself not wanting to stop and go due laundry or make dinner because we were doing so good.

Max and Jake enjoyed watching these great videos that have a cute space theme.

Saxon: All three kids completed 4 lessons of Saxon math.  They are all still in the review period from last year, so it makes math time really easy.  The girls can sit down on their own and complete the worksheets without help. Jake is loving math at this time. He just started his double facts, which is a nice challenge for him.  I will post more about math once we start learning new concepts.

Teaching Textbooks 3: Emily completed lessons 10, 11, and 12 this week.  She is enjoying this program. I love that it teaching her the lesson and she can do it as many times as needed until she understands the concept.

First Language Lessons: We compled lessons 40-44 this week. The girls wrote a cute poem about the months of the year. Then they use our Draw and Write books to add a picture. This lesson even sparked my memory from a child.

All About Spelling (AAS): We reviewed lessson 16 which teaches when to use c and when to use k for the initial sound of /k/ and lesson 17 teaches how to spell words beginning with c and k. Then we moved on to this weeks lesson of 18. Lesson 18 teaches when to double the letters f, l, and s at the end of short vowel words.

Spelling by Sound and Structure: We completed lesson 2. This lesson went perfect with our AAS lesson, as some of the words have double L endings. I like that this program is structured 3 days a week.

Language Art's: Still looking for a program that will work for the girls. Any suggestions would be great.

We are doing this lesson next week. We love Peanuts, I'll have to check our library to see if they have the video-great idea. The language arts book I have for my young one is Phonics Pathways. I had read good things about it. We aren't too far along in it yet. Thanks for visiting my blog:) Enjoyed my visit here.

It looks like the museum was a hit! I like the history pocket books too. We used the ancient one. My girls did not complain about Adventures either!
