Week 8

We began the Old Testament timeline this week. Every week we will be adding to it as we study the Old Testament Bible stories. The girls copied the Greek alphabet, which they loved doing.

The Salamander Room



This week we read the story "The Salamander Room".  It is a very cute story about a little boy who brings a salamander into his room to live.  He imagines what it would be like to transform his room into the forest where the salamander lives.

Its hard to imagine how this huge mass of eggs could come out of a tiny brown salamander. However, it's an old amphibian trick. Week 1 Sun

"Jesus said I am the light of the world"

This week we learned about the Sun, the letter S, and that Jesus is the Light of the World. I really wanted to make sun tea and turn gapes into raisins, but that is really hard to do without the sun. As soon as it stops raining and the sun joins us again, we will make sure to do them.

Jake pulled out the paints today and make his sun. He really enjoyed himself.  I was very grateful, as he really doesn't like to color at all.

For our tactile lettering we used marshmallows to make the letter S.  All the kids love this, and of course they ate them at our next break. I have to remember to do more fun things like this.

Jake made his badge for the week.  We decided to get the beads out and add them to make a necklace (boy necklace of course)

I found a great free site that will allow you to print any paragraph to be copies, so Jake copied our theme this week.

This week was really relaxing for us.  The letter S was a review for Jake, so this was a great letter for us to start with.  He even started asking to do school work before I was ready by the end of the week.  I'm looking forward to next week: M, Moon.  I already have my books from the library and his folder is put together. 

I also decided to start the girls at day 33-34 for now, as we just finished learning the er, ir, ur sounds.  I really love the Charlotte Mason style, so this is fitting right in for us.

Poem #1

This week we will start memorizing poems again.  The girls really enjoy it and we are needed some more fun during our school time.   We will be this poem for copy work and while talking about contractions.

So I'll not pull her tail,

Nor drive her away,

But kitty and I

Very gently will play.



Math Dice Tube

This was another tool for our homeschool that we picked up today.  I loved that some of the dice have numbers for 11-20.  This is something that Jake really needs to work on. He can count to 100, but only visually knows his numbers to 11. 

The girls are both working on fractions right now. We have been playing Auntie Pasta's Fraction Game to help with this.  I was happy to see the fraction dice as well.

Foam Alphabet Cubes

I just purchased this soft foam lowercase alphabet cubes set from Lakeshore Learning in our local area.  I can't wait to use them tomorrow with Jake.  There are a few lower case letters that he gets confused on, so I thought this would be a fun game to play with him.  We will also work on the sounds that the letters make.  He still needs to learn about half of the sounds.

I also thought it would be good to work with the girls on their vowel combinations. We could through the red cubes (vowels) and see what comes up.  Then the girls to take turned naming the sound that they make.

Science Fair

Yesterday Ashley participated in the school science fair.  Her project was to determine if we can measure the weather.  We used her science book as her main reference.  She spend the last month learning about measuring the weather with thermometers, wind vanes, and rain gauges.  She tracked the temperature for two weeks and created a beautifully colored chart. She then tracked how many inches it rained for one week.  She then created a nice line graph chart to show her results. We talked about about wind vanes and how they work.  We looked at lots of different types on the internet.  I had hope to create one with her, but I ran out of time.  To finish off her week, she created a wonderful presentation board to present at the fair.  She also created a three page report on everything that she learned.

I was so proud of Ashley after the fair.  She was the only child in her group (K-3rd grade) that hand wrote all the information on the presentation board.  She was also the only one that completed the report, which was mandatory for the fair.  All the other boards, the parents typed out the information. 

There we lots of great projects there and everyone had a wonderful time.  The also had a lot of vendors there for a curriculum show.  At most of the vendors tables, they had raffles for prizes and candy.  Needless to say, the kids like the curriculum area almost more than looking at all the projects.  I was so happy that teaching textbooks were there.  I got to see the full 3rd grade program. I have been looking into purchasing it for the last year and now I'm sold.  The girls both found vendors to take piano or violin lessons.  Jake found a karate lessons and a nature study class.  My little wild Max loved the gymnastic vendors.  There were two there from our local area.  They both brought a few floor mats and things for the kids to play on or try out.  Max spend almost an hour at just one of the spots.  I'll for sure be getting him into a class next school year while the others are taking their classes on Tuesdays. 

 

Day two of Creation

Today Jake learned about day two of creation.  He is really excited having his own fun school work each day.  He is asked to help ready the verses (Genesis 1:6-8). I would read three or four words and then he would repeat then.  Emily and Jake colored our number two with water, clouds, and the sky. Jake really doesn't like to color much.  He added day two to our lapbook and added his picture and a picture of his family.  For our snack today we had marshmellows and water to represent the clouds and the ocean.  We reviewed day one and talked about what it must of been like to only have water and sky for the earth.

Jake also practiced the letters A-D on a salt tray.  He really loved this part of school.  I think I will do this each day for him.

Creation Game
Roll a die. Then try to shout out what was created on the day on the die (roll a 6 and we say "animals and people", etc.). We waited until the end of our creation unit to try this.

Creation Flashcards and gameboard

I ran across some downloadable flashcards for the 1st 6 days of creation that you could use as a game like "match". Also on the same page is a creation gameboard. On the gameboard, I had to save it and print it to get it all on one page. http://www.ebibleteacher.com/children/ottoc.htm

Creation Mural

For step 7 - the creation book - we did a mural instead, on the ceiling of our hallway! We hung banner paper there and illustrated the day and then attached each one to the banner.

For day 1 - one sheet of white card stock half filled with black glitter, half filled with white glitter for light & darkness.

For day 2 - two sheets of white card stock, one sheet turquoise construction paper – drew cloud shapes on one piece of white card stock, cut them out and glued on cotton. then glued the clouds on the turquoise const paper for sky. covered the other piece of white card stock with blue and green pieces of tissue paper for water (crinkled them, left some flapping – this way, when hung it had some dimension)

For day 3 – half sheet white posterboard – drew in land/water, grass and tree trunks with crayons, then used green construction paper to cut out tree tops. punched out tiny red circles for cherries, medium orange and yellow circles for other fruits. Glued tree tops on and then decorated with punched circle fruit.

For day 4 – black construction paper, two sheets white card stock. cut sun out of one piece of card stock, the moon out of the other. Colored the sun yellow with orange swirls using bright markers, then painted over that with clear orange glitter paint. Added metallic gold and orange curling ribbon rays. Colored the moon light yellow with bright markers, then painted over that with clear yellow glitter paint. Mounted moon on black const paper. punched stars from aluminum foil and added around moon on black paper.

For day 5 – six or seven sheets white card stock – used clip art in computer to make large outlines of several types of birds and fish. Printed them very large on the card stock and cut out around them. Used oil pastels to fill in bright colors and texture.

For day 6 – five sheets white card stock – my dd used colored pencils and drew some of her favorite animals and adam/eve.

For day 7 – get blankets and pillows out and pile them in the hall under the mural. Lie down and rest and enjoy the wonderful things God made!

We had SUCH a great time with this! Each evening when dh came in, we showed him our newest mural piece and he hung it for us...

My Father's World

Well, I'm excited to say I took the leap and ordered My Father's World Kindergarten for Jake and first grade for the girls.  I couldn't be more happy with my decision.  The materials should arrive on Monday. Although the girls are first grade right now, I think we can still use a lot of the program.
